0 2023-11-07I use Evernote for my general task and todo list(if I have the cost for a task, I will try to add the specific numbers to Evernote later — this is important for me). However, for sharing info with others, I wouldn’t recommend using Evernote. The quality decrease issue can be deceiving as I can’t notice it immediately (at least when I reviewed past posts) but usually, the formatting breaks the next week. Sadly, using separate task apps can complicate things even more and I find it impractical to have multiple „task lists“. I hope Evernote improves in this regard.

As others have pointed out in this thread, “nobody seems to give a damn” because many have been able to avoid this problem by not pasting content from their Web clippers directly into their notes and giving it time to render. Given the variety that can go into a note and Evernote’s long and winding history, it’s not surprising that getting a 100% fix on this will take time. Fortunately, there are ways to work around it.

9 2023-12-13Ever since I experienced this issue back around Dec 2021/Jan 2022, I’ve been using the workaround you mentioned. Copying first into a note editor/text editor, making sure the body text renders correctly, then copying the result into Evernote Web Clipper and saving it. The problem is Evernote seems to have changed its content parser such that the resulting new (and updated) Evernote body contents are radically out of sorts now. It was okay up until several months ago, and this new “fix” screws it up badly.
There’s no other software or process herein than Evernote’s own Web Clipper tool doing the damage. Even pasting directly from Google Docs, Office, Notepad, keeping it within Evernote’s own parser (i.e. Web Clipper or its desktop app), it still loses. I’ve conducted my own tests, but copy-pasting directly into a simple text editor and saving the raw HTML .txt file to upload to Archive.org and Wayback Machine, then comparing this with Evernote’s own Web Clipper results shows the parser is still screwing up. Even if it doesn’t screw up on first capture of its “copied” text contents.
the “write it up first then share it to Evernote,” it works until you need to make changes or replay the note contents to restore it back to before it’s body gets mutated by some dumb algo, and working on it outside Evernote is slow and cumbersome. The main point is that you shouldn’t have to do all these workarounds for a reasonably simple process. It ought to be straightforward with a product as expensive as this — it used to be, after all. The tools I’ve used inside Evernote should just be able to show the rendered note as it should be shown, barring any mental gymnastics like “this post title is now its own checkbox” or “this bullet point has disintegrated to who knows where.” It’s a regression, a bug, and they need to fix it, and saying “hey, guy, use a workaround” only gets you so far before the obnoxious bugs continue to bite you in the back.
The Web Clipper should just be able to copy something without completely mutating its format willy-nilly. This is the standard baseline expectation. I don’t mind that they want to add new tags, CSS, etc. but they ought to take care of that without screwing up the rest of the content it’s holding within that same note.

Have you tried moving the emoji into a sticky note within the evernote note? I usually have the issue of text clipping into images so might be a different experience but worth a try.

The one golden rule we can rely on however is invariably “It’s not a bug, it’s a feature!” I fear the current management will have a hard time letting go of that one.

12 2023-11-21Just started importing my Legacy to version 10 and going through and updating and organizing my 3,000 Evernotes. Two posts from my WordPress website directly using the Clipper appear to be perfect. Both show all links, formatting and include correctly placed images. This is specifically for clipping directly from my website. Have not tried anything else.

Sadly, I’m not able anymore to maintain these threads – Evernote is now in private hands, they don’t really need publicly available (researched) information with ETA estimates and the like anymore, so moderators have been given strict orders not to meddle with transaction tracking (or any other information valuable for users).

50 2023-12-14If I were being cynical I’d say that Bending Spoons couldn’t give a damn b/c they aren’t going or willing to fix this. That they prefer taking the pocket change of us obsessives on top of the big corporate billables that are their real aim. In the real world I’m sure its just about the resources and the time. I doubt any of us realize how complex EN is under the hood but I sure would like to see some kind of improvement in their communciation of problems like this. I’m not giving up on them but neither am I blind to whats happened after several months of their new ownership.

42 2023-12-14Evernote’s tech stack is dated and consequently this problem seems to be complex. The problem started in the early days when they were handling pure HTML documents in their application, and I am pretty sure that the clipper extension is capturing pages in HTML format and porting these documents to the application. It seems they are using web view to render this content, and between different operating systems (Windows and Mac being completely different in this aspect) and browser and web view engines this is creating a lot of friction and bugs.
In theory it seems an easy fix, but this is hard to believe: I think we are talking here about years of technical debt that, even with resources, are hard to solve in just weeks or a couple of months.
We can only hope that the problem is serious on their road map and a solution can appear sooner or later. I believe that (once again) a dedicated format proposed by Evernote aligned with the web engines in market could solve this kind of problem, but this will require gigantic effort to make all the content compatible with their solutions. They have a lot to handle.

373 2023-12-14I don’t think the solution is new shiny features. Evernote’s “Stack” was working more or less well (except for the glitch in rendering clipping checkboxes). A huge shake-up with countless new bugs happening before that specific issue is fixed.
Varied formats, varied clients with varied approaches, varied operation systems… that’s Evernote’s strength. An unique selling point. And this was what made me beginning to use Evernote many years ago (after having failed many times with Microsoft OneNote).
The Evernote approach have been to accept varied formats – and then offer a simple editor in a note. A plain editor, but easy to use, even for people who were not “experts” with word processing or other much more complex editing systems. Valuable information was the priority. Not format, not trying to force unpredictable content into a OneNote-like straitjacket or similar. If people needed fancy formatting they could use a word processor and docx instead – and simply insert this file into a note where they also could add all other important information around it. This has been working wonderfully (at least for me).
Instead of embracing Evernote’s strength and keeping note editor and formatting simple, focus is now on trying to make the editor more advanced. This combined with complex html processing and re-rendering, in some cases trying to compress huge web archives into “simpler” format. Do that often enough – with re-imported and re-rendered html – and content will be altered and downgraded (garbage in, garbage out) – because the html processor is most definitely NOT error-free!
So instead of fighting with strange happening formatting, confusing text searching and being limited with sizes and numbers of notes, I therefore totally gave up Evernote for research work and larger projects. Gone back to a self-made database. It’s a pity.
Of course I still use Evernote for other things – like my continuing common households books 2011-2023 (about 400 notes included in 13 notebooks, I’m thinking about fight through it all and extracting the datacontent into a database too, so that I don’t loose information if there happens something radical in Evernote in the future).
But now I definetely wouldn’t dare to gather long term research results in Evernote anymore. Not worth the trouble. Which isn’t really what BS would want me to say 😏

1 2023-12-18I came here to make a dupliacte forum post but it seems I’m late to the party. I just finished a trial of Evernote and in my enthusiasm I think I added private information that I might rather revoke. In my searching for some timeline or a clear seller that could be contacted about such a request, I really just found oodles of marketing “Why is Evernote trash?” hits and other kinds of increasing concern. Could anyone help shine a light in that regard?
Perhaps if one already knows that Evernote will gently inform you that even via the link given in the e-mail where they will tell you the exact day private information will optionally be deleted, that there is no option available when accessing the link or even the article hosting the link. Additionally, this is not instilled with any confidence in that, as far as I can tell, a quick search brings up dozens of different sources for the same information, all posted on the same day, all via blind leads. There’s even some that say they are using actual quotes by the new owner… where wouldn’t you have the official release from the official owner? Now I understand that professional data management is expensive, and these blogs have their own stuff to worry about, great. I understand that cleaning up a rust-covered codebase isn’t easy, especially when users have been allowed to complain about it for over 7 years, excellent. Unfortunately having used it for some time I agree with much of the reckoning, the entire thing mirrors the conduct I might expect from that sort of employer conduct. I found the web version did what I expected the funded programmer version to do; I love the web interface, ads and all, and wouldn’t mind the price for Pro level service. Thus, an extension of that would be a bold and gallant effort in redemptive action and exceptional data contamination sanitation. New procedures and systems in the final release of the current codebase, to gut the egregious part and inspire the damning one.
If I hadn’t ran a trial and only glimpsed the pile of 3 segments with developers talking to class with the technical owners, like I’d experienced a little over a week before I’d designed and pushed a hospital database using specifications that spanned multiple widely simultaneous use-cases, I wouldn’t expect this kind of indecisive brush off. Sure, I didn’t read every line, I just didn’t expect to need to, so sue me. my part, lacking the patience to bathe without a book, I am to blame. I agreed to community guidelines warning me of adult content on forums and wondered of it being short for features instead. However, nobody else has anything to say? So it begins, with a couple emails promising they have our back, just grin and bear the bookmark of all information, I wish I could just get back in my grubby bunk to white-out any bother.

181 2023-12-22As is always the case in software development, there are limited resources to accomplish a myriad of things. One of the challenges in a web centric world is supporting various standards implemented in different ways by different browsers. In general, I think if you are forwarding a web site from a major utility with a simple layout to expectations in Evernote are likely to be met. The more complex the web presentation or the fewer users of the offering, the greater the chance that Evernote’s conversion will not do well.
I have found newer versions have been performing well — so they are working on solutions.

I notice various cut/paste (or editor?) related issues in last few months. But often I’m not able to reproduce them or find exact sequence that causes problems. Not sure how to describe this one. It’s not unicode.

I followed best practice of adding comment with copy&paste contents of Export to .html, but got “You can upload up to 132.27 MB of files.” Maybe file contains information that can help identify problem?
I know issue is not very important since there is text left that can be read. But for me it is one more sign that cutting/copying from random places produces random results. Some failures more annoying than other. I had instances when highlight function and spellcheck was disabled and only thing I was able to do is copy note content to .txt and use find/replace in good old editor.
