A workshop at the Manufacture in 1963, the year of the North Pole expedition

Yet again, the Reverso defied expectations. At a time and place where any slight failure in the movement would mean its – and its owner’s – certain death, the Calibre 478/6CW proved to be sublimely accurate. The movement features all the goodness of 1960s watch development, like the Micromegas regulator, covering even the finest beats for average adjustment; a new alloy for the movement’s balance-spring makes it insensitive to magnetic field and has a sharp effect on accuracy; and an ultra-stable balance wheel. The result is a movement that loses only 1.5 to 2 minutes per month in the event of violent temperature changes. Safe to say Hubert Richard’s little Reverso easily passed this harsh exam with flying colors. The lead-up to the expedition was not devoid of its own drama. After a couple of test flights in unfavorable conditions, where temperatures dropped to -35 degrees (that’s in Celsius, if you’re wondering), it was time for Paul-Emile to put his choice for the watchmaker’s brand on the line. On March 25, 1963, the Citroën half-tracks were airlifted to Greenland. While one of the planes was still in flight, two enormous gasoline tanks, weighing several hundred kilos each, suddenly came off. One of them fell onto the wing, damaging a landing gear. The plane, at a steady height of 100 meters, had no choice but to try to land and fight off the inevitable crash: it was hard, rough, violent, and painful.

As you might imagine, a Reverso case protected its micromechanical movement from the denting that doomed many military wristwatches. It’s a mark of the success of the Reverso that a timepiece originally designed for the polo pitch would be adopted as a tank watch. The Case Decor with Friezes, Skyscrapers, and PioneersThe Reverso’s case decor proclaims its historical identity and underlines what makes this unique watch

tick: its unorthodox, even revolutionary shapes. The steel Reverso Tribute chronograph is available in a choice of two dials. Both feature the Manufacture’s signature Clous de Paris guilloché pattern, presented in a new

interplay. In the first version, the chapter ring, inner flange, and minute and second totalizers are Clous de Paris-decorated, and the background is matt-finished. The second version has a Clous de Paris-ornamented background
