We can use electron configurations to illustrate the electron transfer process between sodium atoms and chlorine atoms. Recall that the valence electrons of an atom are the electrons located in the highest occupied principal energy level. Valence electrons are primarily responsible for the chemical behavior of elements.
The electron configurations of sodium and chloride ions—the components of table salt (NaCl)—provide a useful insight to the octet rule. Recall the electron configuration of sodium, which is 1s22s22p63s¹. Sodium has 1 valence electron, which it is “eager” to give up so that it has a filled outer valence shell:
